Environmental Concerns

Environmental Concerns

An environmental concern is defined as anything that poses a potential risk to the quality of the groundwater in Harford County and to the health of individuals drinking from the groundwater. 

Environmental concerns include the following:

1. Fuel Storage Tanks – underground or above ground tanks that contain gasoline, diesel fuel, or heating oil.  Click here for more information.

2. Landfills/Dumps – areas in Harford County were solid waste is disposed including landfills, rubble fills, illegal dumps, and farm dumps.  Click here for more information.

3. Sludge Sites – agricultural properties in the county where sewage sludge is applied for the fertilization of crops.  Click here for more information.

4. Salt Storage – areas in the county were salt is stored for the use on roads during inclement weather.  Click here for more information.

5. Pesticide Storage – businesses that store and sell pesticides for agricultural use.  Click here for more information.

6. Hazardous Waste Sites – sites contaminated by hazardous  waste including superfund sites and brownfields.  Click here  for more information.


Environmental Concerns Map

Our office maintains maps and files of the environmental concern sites in Harford County.  Individuals utilizing drinking water wells within a thousand feet of an environmental concern are encouraged to test their wells for potential contaminants.  Click here for a list of regulated contaminants. You can view the map for your area by following the these two steps:

Step 1: Using the map of Harford County below, find the property you want to view. Then left click the map with your mouse.

Step 2:  Use the legend in the upper left corner of the “Map” page to identify the type of Environmental Concern on the property.  The number on each property is the “Parcel” number.  To identify and research a property at the Harford County Health Department, use the “Map” number and the “Parcel” number to reference the property.  For properties with an identical “Map” number and “Parcel” number, the name of the subdivision and lot number will be needed to reference the property.

Disclaimer: The location/type of an Environmental Concern is an approximation and may change over time.  For an accurate location and the current status of an Environmental Concern, a file search should be done at the Harford County Health Department or Maryland Department of the Environment.
