RING IN THE NEW YEAR TOBACCO FREE

HEALTH DEPARTMENT OFFERS FREE STOP TOBACCO CLASSES

BEL AIR, MD (December 5, 2007)—The Harford County Health Department is offering free, stop tobacco classes to residents wanting to become tobacco-free in the New Year.  Classes will take place in both Bel Air and Edgewood.

The six-week Bel Air classes will take place at the Harford County Health Department located at 119 S. Hays Street on Monday, January 7th with a Pre-Quit class from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Following the Pre-Quit class, the five-session quit class will take place on January 14th, 21st, 28th and February 4th and 11th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

The Edgewood classes will be held at the Edgewood Senior Center located at 1000 Gateway Road   The Pre-Quit Class will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, January 11th with the five- session quit class following on January 18th, 25th, February 1st, 8th, and 15th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

“Many tobacco users decide to make a health resolution and stop using tobacco around the first of the year.  This program is designed to give them the extra assistance needed to hopefully succeed at becoming tobacco free,” said Linda Pegram, the Cessation and Minority Outreach at the Health Department.  “Additionally, these classes will begin just before the Clean Indoor Air Act goes into effect in Maryland on February 1st which will prohibit smoking in any indoor public place including bars and restaurants. Not surprisingly, one of the biggest obstacles for smokers trying to quit is the urge to smoke when they are out socially in public places with other smokers.”

The classes include developing a plan to quit using tobacco, learning stress management techniques, receiving information on keeping weight under control while quitting, and discussing relapse prevention.  Nicotine patches and lozenges are available to those participants who qualify.

Pre-registration is required and the Pre-Quit Class is mandatory for all first-time participants.  For more information or to register for one of the Stop Tobacco Classes, please call the Harford County Health Department at (410) 638-8405.  Class schedule can also be obtained by visiting the Harford County Health Department website at www.harfordcountyhealth.com.
